Dentin is the calcified underlayment of the tooth that is covered by the enamel. It is inherently yellowish. If your enamel is thin, the yellow dentin might show through prominently, making your teeth appear yellow. After the age of about 15 however, the enamel is sufficiently thick enough in most cases to hide the dentin. After that stage, if your teeth are yellow, it is more likely due to staining…either from the inside or the outside of the tooth.
Inside staining is most likely caused as your teeth were developing as a baby; it may have been caused inside the womb with medications that the mother was taking, development as a child, or medications taken during childhood and even into adulthood. These are more likely causes of this type of staining. Tetracycline for example, a common antibiotic used for severe acne, and is a big problem that can cause graying of the teeth, and can only be whitened properly by a dentist. Brushing and white strips cannot erase the effects of inside staining. You need to see a dentist!
Outside staining is caused by many factors: foods, drinks and tobacco to name a few. Home remedies, and over-the-counter solutions may cause sensitivities in teeth and gums, spotting, and even destruction or thinning of the tooth enamel. Most people that try home remedies or over-the-counter solutions end up seeing a dentist afterwards as the effects are weak at best. Once tooth enamel has been weakened, or destroyed, it will not grow back. Caution is advised when attempting to use over-the-counter solutions to whiten your teeth! Permanent damage my happen.
